Rest assured, this will be the cleanest you’ll ever see this mountain bike. It’s Tony Pereira’s own, and like Tony is one half of Breadwinner Cycles, his Bad Otis 27.5″ MTB is usually seen hanging around with his 1975 Yamaha XS650.
Tony designed and fabricated a rack for the back of his customised XS to carry the Bad Otis to and from the trailhead, so the stories of both are interwoven, and you can read all about the motorbike today on our petrol-powered big brother site, Bike EXIF.
The Bad Otis is one of nine models offered by Breadwinner Cycles, the partnership business between two of Portland’s most respected and passionate frame builders, Tony and Ira Ryan. It’s a seriously shreddable 27.5″-tyred trail eater.
Tony has been wrenching and riding on his XS650 even longer than he’s been building custom frames with Breadwinner Cycles, or even Pereira Cycles, his original enterprise. Working on his moto is a hobby that Tony loves, and he intends to keep it that way.
Ira Ryan loves motorbikes too, and rides his BMW R65 whenever he’s not brazing bicycle frames. He’d had already assembled a rack for it to carry his bike around, so it wasn’t long before Tony followed suit.
With Tony’s rack finished and successfully tested, the XS650 was repainted — then inspiration struck: His Bad Otis was painted to match, and the ensemble debuted in February at the 2016 North American Handmade Bicycle Show.
Needless to say, the combination made a huge impression. As well as the mothership moto, a Silca pump was painted to match. After the NAHBS, however, it headed straight back to the trails to muddy up that showroom shine.
The Bad Otis model is designed for flicking around forested single trail, or chucking across outback bedrock. The slack head tube angle is designed around a 160mm travel fork, balanced by short chain stays and a 1x drivetrain.
The frameset is available for USD$$1895, or complete for USD$4450. This one’s Tony’s though. It would be a shame to break up such a great looking pair. Head to the Breadwinner Cycles website for more information.
