It took years of riding BMW GS motorbikes and a new build from Berlin’s Cicli Bonanno to draw a correlation between all-road bikes and the Munich builders’ on/off-road designation of Gelände Straße. But there you go. You learn something new every day.

Constantin Gerlach is a German photographer who just took possession of his new all-road bike by Niccolò Bonanno, an Italian builder based in Berlin. Nico’s already built some spectacular frames, like this new ‘Stay Loco’.

Stay Loco is Nico’s “exploration tool” — a frame he first built for the 2017 Transcontinental ride and which has been tamed by his Muntagnin Citadin mates. It now stands as the Cicli Bonanno all-road frame.

Designed around tire widths of 50mm with 27.5″ wheels or 40mm with 28″ wheels, Stay Loco is a Columbus Spirit-framed burly beast of a bike that Constantin has built up just how it should be.

Constantin spec’d Rotor’s impressive 3D crankset with a 27.5″ tubeless-ready set Hunt Bike Wheels, shod with gumwall Panaracer Gravelking SK tires, driven by Shimano’s XT pedals and a SRAM Force rear mech.

Constantin has always had a thing for the aesthetics and ride quality of modern steel bikes. He also has a steel road bike from another German brand, but it’s not a complete custom bike. “For me,” he tells us, “there is nothing better.”

He dreamed of a custom frame built with passion because he’s passionate about his photography. When he met Nico, saw his work and heard him talk about his craft, he was convinced he was the right guy to build him his dream bike.

After seeing a beat-up Land Rover Defender painted in Keswick Green, Constantin requested that his frame was painted in the same color — it’s also the same shade as the pine trees in the forests that are his favorite to ride through.
