Field Cycles Cross / Classics

The British fascination with enjoying cups of tea at regular intervals can be a little much for foreigners to understand, but even a short visit to the island of Great Britain will make it easier to swallow. Field Cycles, based in Sheffield, make a point of starting the briefing process of one of their frames with ‘a good brew’ accompanied by a fig roll. A very good brew must have initiated their latest, which draws inspiration from roads such as the Koppenberg and the poorly maintained B roads around Sheffield.

The cobblestones of the Paris–Roubaix have influenced the design of the bikes used for the infamous Classic—slightly more relaxed angles than a pure racer provides a small amount of compensation for the relentless 250km barrage. This is Field Cycles’ own take on a pavé bike: based on both ‘cross and road geometries and clearances for 35mm tyres. Fittingly, it’s all steel, with a Reynolds 853 and 651 front triangle, Columbus Life and Zona stays and 4130 Chromoly seat tube, seat post top and stem.

Special thanks to Harry Harrison for the photography. Head to the Field Cycles gallery for more, which will give you a better idea of the treacherous roads and spellbinding scenery this bike was built for.
