Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Independent Fabrications x Phil Wood

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of riding any Phil Wood product, you’ll understand the peace of mind and confidence they inspire. From 1971 they have been supplying cyclists with the ultimate in precision craftsmanship and innovation. To celebrate their 40th Anniversary, Phil Wood and Independent Fabrication teamed up for a run of bikes, limited to 40 editions (41 including this 00/40).

Independent Fabrications need no introduction; they have been producing some of our favorite frames for around 15 years. The perfect welds on these precious titanium tubes only demonstrate their ability in this area.

Built up for the 2010 North American Handmade Bicycle Show, the polished ti frame is equipped entirely with 40th Anniversary Phil Wood components — hence the XL. You knew XL is 40 in Roman numerals, didn’t you? Oh good. The hubs and chain ring have had the numerals subtracted from them, and the Phil signature logo is applied wherever possible. If it hasn’t already been secured, you can request your preferred number and it will be inscribed individually. Interestingly, a Gilles Berthoud saddle has been specified, a stylish departure from the norm. An Edge stem and fork is up front, but thankfully will be installed without logos. The head badge is a custom stainless steel piece, and really is the crowning glory on what is already a worthy homage to Phil Wood and their ongoing dedication to perfection.

Keep an eye on the Indpendent Fabrication blog for the latest output from their workshop.
