The final day of August 2017 — a fitting day to feature one of Gavin Buxton’s latest August Bicycles: an apricot pastel-painted daily rider for Jen, one of Bristol’s hard working midwives, painted by her husband, Doktor Bobby of Colourburn Studio.

Gavin has kept himself busy since last year’s Bespoked show at which he won the Urban Cyclist Town/Load Carrying Award for his Beige Townie — his ultimate commmuter machine that helped establish his bold signature style.

A natural and professional engineer, Gavin designs his frames to be strong and elegant with a decided lack of elaborate details. They are normally fillet brazed, which results in a smooth, uncluttered and streamlined shape.

Jen’s August is her own version of the award-winning townie, adjusted to her geometry. It’s based on an Alfine 8 drivetrain, with SLX brakes and a front hub that Gavin laced into Velocity Blunt rims — remember that Gavin is also one of the UK’s top wheelbuilders.

The frame is constructed from Columbus Zona with a pair of August’s proprietary dropouts that snugly accommodate the calipers. The fork, rack, and stem are custom-built from 4130 Chromoly, with the stem’s integrated bell mount hiding the bolts.

Colourburn’s Doktor Bobby is known for his hot rod paint schemes and effects, but pulled it back for Jen’s frame. The hues are inspired by one of her favorite flowers and there are other personal references on the stem and bottom bracket shell.
