Lundbeck Cycles Number 4

Long-time readers of Cycle EXIF have had the opportunity to watch the progress of some artisan frame builders over the last three years the site has been running. Number 4, ironically, is the name given to Max Lundbeck‘s fourth frame, although it’s the first time the Cincinnati local’s work has been featured here. Max is now up to frame number twenty but let’s start with this black and pink road bike.

Max specializes in nimble road bikes and stylish urban bikes, with the odd cyclocross bike thrown in for good measure. Number 4 was built for a good friend, the owner of a bike shop down the road who has been supportive in getting Max set up as a frame builder. The frame consists of lightweight Columbus Life tubes, whose thin walls need to be brazed with care due to its heat-treated delicacy.

A silver-based filler was used for the conjunctions, requiring more temperature control than brass as the material is wetter. “The geometry is built to the standard that I’ve come to prefer for an all-round racing bike,” Max tells us, “and is fitted with my favorite mechanical groupset, Campy Chorus. It’s been a couple of years and twenty-plus frames since it was built but we’re both still very pleased with it.”
