Collin Schaafsma’s Matter Cycles is awaiting a new website, but that’s because he’s been busy building himself a new ranch in Boulder, Colorado. He’s still been building some beast-like bikes, though, and a Wolfbeard has even made it Down Under.

It was a longtime ambition of Sydney’s Marco Cailao to visit the North American Handmade Bicycle Show and while he was there, he happened across Collin’s booth. He connected with what Collin was doing and asked him to build a modified Wolfbeard.

The Wolfbeard is Matter Cycles’ all-roader, designed around a 700c platform, although Marco requested that it be also able to fit a 27.5×2.2 wheel in there. Incidentally, this is the first Wolfbeard built with this versatility.

Boulder is the perfect testing ground for Matter Cycles and each of Collin’s frames, which include the BeneFat fat bike, the GhostCat adventure shredder and the SlayRide aggressive hardtail, have been refined according to the abundance of local trails.

Collin TIG-welds his frames from a mix of True Temper and Columbus steel tubes and while they’re standard models, they can all be adjusted to the customer’s individual geometry and requirements.

Along with the Ultegra drivetrain, Marco assembled a rock-solid list of parts, like the Thomson finishing kit and Brooks Cambium saddle, while the White Industries/Pacenti wheels were built by New Zealand’s Wheelworks.
