Rollin' On The River: Montenegro MFG

Hernan Montenegro’s workshop is a few blocks away from the iconic Los Angeles River, which provided the backdrop for his new project. Montenegro MFG is a composite fabrication specialist that has finished a road frame that’s built L.A. tough.

Naturally, Hernan is tempted to indulge his love for cars and motorbikes, but the main focus of his firm is the bicycle. He’s fascinated by new materials and has experimented very successfully with bamboo frames, but carbon just offers far more versatility.

Hernan has extensive experience with the carbon bike frame industry, but Montenegro MFG also makes parts for motorbikes, cars, artists and even medical equipment. After repairing over a thousand carbon frames, Hernan has seen what works and what… fails.

The new bike frame utilises a tube-to-tube process with a mix of ENVE and Dedacciai tubes, with a proprietary top tube made in-house. Herman has designed them to be stiff, comfortable and durable, with a racing orientation.

Herman says “Ordering a frame starts with an e-mail (or a talk at my shop) to discuss what type of rider they are and what the bike will be intended for. I get their measurements from their fitter and we go from there.

“Usually my clients have a bike that they already like. I take the aspects they like about it and change the things they don’t like about it.” Stock frames will also be available soon, as will the custom handlebars and seat/post option.
