Paino Strada

Justin Fox certainly has an eye for details, and style for miles. The restoration of his Frank Paino-built strada frame has been a voyage of experimentation and discovery for him in what makes a classic build, and finally we can see the finished product. The process was documented on the Bikes Move Us forum, and now appears as you see it here: in all its original glory.

Frank Paino is one of those mystical characters who inhabit the pages of the close-knit, pre-internet Australian cycling and frame building community. He established Miranda Cycles in the South Sydney area during the 80s; his frames earned their world champion stripes by carrying Gary Sutton (the current NSW Institute of Sport Head Cycling Coach) to victory in the same era. Justin has recreated a bike even Frank would be proud of, resplendent with a full Campagnolo gruppo of mixed pedigrees: Nuovo and Super Record, Gran Sport and Tipo. Interestingly, Justin had the frame repainted by Peter at Sydney’s Star Enamellers, who painted it originally. What goes around comes around, apparently.

Justin and Frank should both be happy with the result; it’s certainly a testament to Justin’s skill and passion. Another feather in his cap, he can now add ‘accomplished modern classic bicycle restorer’ to his resume, which also happens to include ‘one of Australia’s top designers’.
