When it comes to art, we all see different things. As they say, we may not know it, but we know what we like. A hand-painted frame by Dario Pegoretti is a reflection of the man who has lived a life full of colour and passion for speed and steel.

Above Category Cycling, located in Sausalito, is one of California’s most premium local bike shops and a proud dealer of Pegoretti frames — take this Responsorium, for example, one of the latest bikes to leave the workshop.

Dario’s enthusiasm is contagious and for those that see the beauty in his brightly coloured frames consider owning one to be somewhat of a Holy Grail. As you’d expect, the waiting list is long and when you finally receive it, you’ll want it built up in a deserved manner.

The customer, a local Bay Area rider and a dedicated fan of Pegoretti’s work and art, opted for a Responsorium after discussion with Chad Nordwall, principal of Above Category. A square 54cm frame turned out to be a perfect fit, although the paint is most definitely not stock.

The artwork was inspired by a Russian artist who resonates particularly with Pegoretti, and features particular details like the name of his beloved hound and lucky numbers. These frames are a refreshing change from the vinyl cut graphics so prevalent these days.

Originally opting for gold Shamal wheels and a matching finishing kit, the more subtle silver was chosen to highlight the frame. A mix of Campagnolo Super Record and Chorus was the perfect complement, accentuated with CeramicSpeed pulleys and 3T stem, seat post and handlebars.

To get it all moving, 18-hole Zipp 202 clinchers were laced to with White Industries T11 hubs front and rear, and shod with Vittoria Open Corsa Evo SC gumwalls. It’s a masterpiece of Italian spirit and engineering, destined to bring a splash of colour to the Californian hills.
