Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Primarius Artisan

Primarius Artisan

Given the otherworldly fascination the Dutch have with the bicycle, it wasn’t going to be too long before it was elevated beyond the utilitarian fiets that glide around Amsterdam in plague proportions to the wonder of functional design it actually is.

Dutch design group Signiatura already have a sublime portfolio that includes tableware and furniture, and their collection is now graced by their take on the beautiful machine: The Artisan, a handcrafted, limited edition interpretation of the traditional Dutch bike. Gone is the step-through layout (unless you opt for De Lady Artisan), it’s replaced by a Royal Blue, Columbus Zona frame that arcs from the Brooks B-17 saddle to the Nitto-equipped cockpit and Shimano Alfine controls. The dropouts are formed by a capital P for Primarius, a marque that originated around 1917 and resurrected by Signiatura to restore high design to the major form of transportation in The Netherlands.

The Artisan has been created for those who appreciate exceptional design, or who understand that a stock, off-the-peg bicycle would clash dreadfully with their bespoke interior. View more of The Artisan on the Primarius website, where you can also download a brochure and find ordering information.
