Possibly the funnest cycling event ever, Grinduro, made it’s inaugural international debut on the Isle of Arran in Scotland a few weeks ago. In keeping with the US edition tradition, a few UK frame builders were invited to build a bike for the occasion — one of them was London’s Quirk Cycles who brought along this Monster ‘Crosser.
There was plenty of variety in the series of custom bikes, to match the range of weather and terrain conditions on July 15th. With an emphasis on recycling, Robert Quirk decided to utilise the rear triangle of the first frame he made — another fat-tyred CX bike — with new top-and-down tubes and revised geometry.
The gradient paintwork was made up from some colors that were left over from old jobs too: some blue and silver were mixed for the teal, and the pink is comprised of hot candy, orange, and purple. Dan Cole from Cole Coatings happened to drop by the workshop and offered to apply the fade.
More components from the parts bin were conscripted: a cut down 11-speed cassette turned it into a 10-speed, which was married to a GX rear mech and rescued 10-speed SRAM Apex and Rival shifters. Halo provided the Vapour 29er wheels — cased in 40c WTB Nano rubber — and SRAM the crankset.
