Yesterday was an auspicious day for the Clarence Street Cyclery family: it was the launch of a limited edition kit that has been produced in association with Attaquer that featured the artwork of one of Australia’s favorite artists, Reg Mombassa.
If you were born during the 70s or 80s, or surfed, skated, or listened to music, you’d be familiar with Mambo Clothing and their graphic style. Their influence was vast, like Deus Ex Machina is today. Not surprisingly, as Dare Jennings was the founder of both.
Mambo was born upon the shoulders of the artists who contributed their work to T-shirts, board shorts, tour posters and much more. But one of the most recognisable styles was that of Chris O’Doherty or Reg Mombassa, as he is more popularly known.
(That’s Reg in the beanie) Clarence Street Cyclery has been managed by the Cook family for over 40 years, and David Cook (right) has been a fan of Reg’s work since they worked together on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games celebrations.
David approached Attaquer — makers of exceptional and colourful cycling kit — to produce a limited run of jerseys and bibs emblazoned with one of Reg’s unmistakeable images on the front and legs.
The entire run and a stock of t-shirts very nearly sold out with minutes of launching, but if you pray very hard to Australian Jesus another run of these highly collectable kits might just miraculously appear.
