Orange Is The New: St Joris Cycles Road

After a relaxing festive season, it’s time for us to return to a new year of miles upon our favorite vehicle, and what better way for The Spoken readers to celebrate 2018 than with a big orange roadie, handmade by Alex de Kraker of Eindhoven’s St Joris Cycles.

Yorit Kluitman is a Dutch graphic designer who also resides in the south Netherland city of Eindhoven, just nearby the workshop of St Joris Cycles. When Yorit discovered he and Alex were neighbors, Yorit immediately struck up a conversation about a custom build.

Already in ownership of a production Stoemper, Yorit sought a new frame with a more specific custom geometry and underwent two bike fittings and further discussions to determine how the new frame should behave.

Yorit was after a more stable road bike that was more comfortable after many hours in the saddle, that could handle multi-day tours through local routes and was tailored specifically to his tall body.

Alex fillet brazed the frame with a combination of Dedacciai and oversized Columbus Spirit tubes. The massive bicep-like chainstays are Columbus Max, resulting in a responsive power transfer to the rear wheel.

Yorit has been working on a project called ‘Bicycle Landscape‘ which photographically captures the characteristics of the Dutch terrain, one that does not naturally include much in the way of altitude.

There are 388 regular municipalities (gemeenten) in The Netherlands and he set himself the goal of riding through every one, a journey that his new St Joris was destined to be part of, hence the orange paint.

“The behavior of the ride is perfectly set for the Dutch landscape,” Yorit says. “No sharp twisting mountain roads but long flat stretches of smooth cycling lanes. As for the build, Alex got ENVE involved in the project and that made the dream bike really complete.”
