Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Vanguard RYO

There’s no doubting the intimidating effect that fat bikes and their 4-inch-plus tires have, for the simple promise of their ability to roll through terrain previously thought to be impenetrable by bicycle, like sand, snow and head-size rocks. It was inevitable that they begin to encroach on the city limits, like Jeeps with asphalt-only rubber. Vanguard Designs have recently moved from Singapore to Niseko, Japan, along with a fat bike that’s buff enough to turn the style-focused locals.

Shaun and Jacinta Sonja have already created some memorable customizations from their Singapore base and their recent relocation is obviously further inspiration. They source vintage parts from around the world to accentuate their “prét ‘a roulér characteristic“. Ryo, however, is based on a new frame by a Japanese builder who’s actually a vintage Japanese car restorer. It’s built up with a modern Shimano Tourney group set and Innova 26″x4″ tires, but it’s sure to stir up a storm on the streets of Japan.

Special thanks to Vanguard Designs for the shots and James Snl for the tip.
