Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is important, and it’s crucial for those with stressful jobs to seek an equal and opposite creative outlet. Troy Selvaratnam runs his law firm, specialising in commercial litigation, in New York and equalises it by building custom bicycles under the moniker of Vigo Cycles.

This Urban Road Bike is actually the third from Vigo Cycles we’ve seen on The Spoken, the first two — CX 001 and 002 — were created for the Northeast ‘cross circuit. Today’s is a different beast, however, built for a variety of disciplines.

Troy fills us in: “This is a fairly versatile road bike intended for rides in the New York City area — trips out to the beach at Jacob Riis Park, rides up to Piermont and Nyack, the NYC Century Bike Tour — and weekend trips out of town with the family.

“Eyelets allow the customer to throw on a rear rack and fenders for city riding, but for now it’s in sport mode to take advantage of the optimal weather around here this time of year. Also, the owner wanted to be able to put a child’s seat on the back for rides in Prospect Park and beyond with his kids.

“As such, I deviated from my horizontal top tube preference to make it easier to straddle the bike. The bike is a mix of Columbus Life, Zona and Spirit tubes and features Llewellyn dropouts and cable stops.

“I had a more modest budget compared with previous builds, but Ultegra and Deda components are indeed great value. Toby Stanton at Hot Tubes continues to do stellar work with the Vigo paint jobs.

Troy is limiting output at the moment until a permanent workshop can be established but inquiries can be sent to him at troysel (at) earthlink (dot) net. Big thanks to Ian Rutter for the photos.
