The Giro d’Italia celebrated its 101st edition last June, and it seems to be maturing more gracefully and stylishly than its French counterpart. To celebrate the Italian Grand Tour, Werking Cycles created a special edition of their Anormale frame.

Carbon fiber and composite technology has been Andrea Sega’s plaything since his university days when he was experimenting with designs, layups and weaves. It wasn’t long before he graduated to bicycle frames.

Andrea founded Werking Cycles in Trentino, a region in the north of Italy famous for its proximity to the Dolomites and, therefore, a favored destination of summer cyclists. Indeed, Trentino hosts its own Giro del Trentino and the Maratona dles Dolomites.

The Anormale would be our weapon of choice to battle the Maratona dles Dolomites — the annual granfondo that traverses 175km and seven summits in the area. Open to amateurs, although limited to 9,000 entrants, it’s a gargantuan test of legs.

An evolution of Werking’s previous Model A and S frames, the Anormale is, like the others in Werking’s range, made entirely by hand, by Andrea, from the tubes to the custom lay-up. This one, in particular, is a tribute to the 101st Giro.

If you’re the type that gets high on resin fumes, the Giro 101 Anormale is made up of four different types of carbon fiber: UD fiber for the main tubes, 3K twill for the chainstays, 6k spread for joint wrap mixed with tiny pieces of 1k plain.

A touch of pink was added to the paint on the ENVE 2.0 fork — and with a Chris King headset — as a omaggio to the Maglia Rosa jersey and the sixteenth stage of the 2018 Giro, from Trento to Rovereto, a city in very close proximity to the Werking workshop.

In keeping with the tradition of the Giro, Andrea designed the frame with round tubes. Speed and comfort were incorporated into the shape of the seat and chain stays, and the disc brake version of the Anormale can fit a 30mm tire.

If you’re counting, a 54cm Anormale weighs 850g. Just for the weight weenies, Andrea also founded Alpitude Components, an outlet for smaller parts like Garmin mounts, chain catchers, and the ultra-minimal 9.5g Superleggero Bottlecage.
