Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

A. Pourquoy

A. Pourquoy

While a pourquoi is a fictional narrative that explains why something is the way it is, for example why a snake has no legs, or why a tiger has stripes, A. Pourquoy is a vintage French marque with virtually no information available on the web. So the origins of today’s bike is a complete mystery to us, and especially to it’s owner, Peter Gilissen from Belgium.

Peter has, however, turned the proverbial lead into gold with his restoration. You can view the transformation process on the Rat Rod Bikes forum, which involved re-threading the original French bottom bracket (the bane of any bicycle restorer who’s attempted any serious work on a vintage Motobecane or Peugeot) to accept an English thread, and a complete overhaul of the historic Fichtel & Sachs rear coaster hub. Just goes to show that even the rustiest basket case can be resurrected into a gleaming jewel.

Peter would love to hear from any readers who has any more information on the Pourquoy name. If you can help out, please leave a comment below.
