Two worlds have been colliding for the past year, spawning a slow-motion collaboration between the traditional skills of Demon Frameworks’ Tom Warmerdam and Melbourne’s futuristic Bastion Cycles.
Tom’s hand-crafted lug designs have found a fertile petri dish in Bastion’s 3D printed technology, which will be applied to an extremely limited production run of frames — only one per country.
Bastion’s Managing Director Benjamin Schultz is a big fan of Tom’s work and after striking up a conversation on Instagram, they met at the 2016 Bespoked show. Both were excited about a potential alliance that combined each other’s work.
“In parallel,” Ben tells us, “I had been talking to David by email and he was interested in doing something even more unique and special than our standard lugs. He came down to meet me at Bespoked and as he described what he was after it sounded exactly like what Tom and I had been discussing!”
Everyone involved agrees it was a fated meeting, and production details were initialised. The ‘lugs’ are ‘printed’ from aerospace-grade titanium, and it’s taken a year of development to crystallise a design of Tom’s that was maintained the same level of Bastion’s strength and durability.
Tom’s work is some of the most striking and elaborate custom work you’ll see in this lifetime, and to marry it to Bastion’s equally impressive methods has resulted in an intriguingly sublime and considered machine.
The ‘DD’ on the non-driveside dropout is the customer’s initials — and if you’re one of the successful customers, they’ll be your initials. One per country… That’s only 196, so you’d better get cracking.
