Baum Cycles Cordata

Darren Baum has certainly come a long way from tacking two frames together at the age of 14 to make a tandem. Darren, and the team at Baum Cycles, must now be Australia’s most complete modern frame builder. They are specialists in titanium and steel, and produce not only world-class road frames, but the Land Rover Defender of touring bikes and a hardtail mountain bike that’s deceptively pretty: it’s also scalpel sharp.

The Cordata is the stainless steel extension of Baum’s off-road arm, complemented by the titanium Exerta and Extensa. Each frame is designed according to the personal dimensions of the customer, and it is this part of the process to which Darren Baum pays special attention. When he was 17 years old and starting to break into the Australian elite racing circuit, he was involved in a high speed crash from behind by a car traveling at 130km/h. Since his recovery, Darren focused on biomechanics in an attempt to discover how good frame design can benefit performance. One thing you can be assured of, a Baum Cycle will ride and fit as good as it looks.

You can browse the collection of Baum Cycles on their Flickr page, and there’s a great mini-doco on Darren by director Mick Sowry on the Baum Cycles blog.
