Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

It’s no secret that John Watson has a passionate interest in Eddy Merckx and the frames that are produced under his name. As the editor of one of the world’s most popular fixed gear culture blogs, The Radavist, John installs a regular ‘Merckx Mondays’ post. It’s a riveting read for anyone with a slight fascination with the Merckx legend and classic bicycle culture. Little wonder, then, that his Team Stuttgart edition has been authentically built up and is also a daily rider.

Edouard Louis Joseph Merckx has been called ‘the most accomplished rider that cycling has ever known’. It’s an inspiring brand to buy into; it only takes a small inspection into his career to develop a respect for the man who won so many events during the days when technology and conditions were far more difficult than they are today.

John has built his Corsa Extra up with a period correct mix of Campagnolo Nuovo Record and Cinelli Milano stamped bars and stem. Constructed from Columbus SLX, the frame ain’t perfect, but it gets ridden, and enjoyed. Seeing as John is quite capable of a full repertoire of fixed gear freestyle manoeuvres, he is quite aware of the rarity of his forks and assures us he will ride this Merckx as it was intended: with both wheels on the tarmac.
