Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Hillman Pista

There’s an abundance of beautiful bicycles in Melbourne, due to the city’s topographic resemblance to a pancake. It has been home to a selection of Australia’s most accomplished custom frame builders over the years, including the Hill family. Hillman frames have a long-established presence on Aussie streets and velodromes, carrying many champions to local victories and even an Olympic excursion.

Melbourne photographer Andy ‘Fame & Spear’ Rogers is the latest custodian of this Hillman, brought into being by Gordon Hill, circa 1997. It’s seen extended service on the track, possibly at Brunswick velodrome, which is the setting for these fantastic shots. A fitting location, as Hillman Cycles, after 50 years, is still located nearby. The complete parts list for the Hillman, as well as more detail shots, can be found on Andy’s Flickr set. If you’d like to see your beloved ride captured with the same skill and dexterity, contact Andy through his website, Fame and Spear.
