The latest installment in the annual collaboration between Paul Components and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. really makes it look like a consistent collection of green hoppy radness and, like the previous iterations, it’s up for grabs in a giveaway.

For the last couple of years, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Paul Components have together assembled a promotional bike to be displayed at either NAHBS or, like this year, the Sea Otter Classic — although the 2020 Classic will be a somewhat different format.

Thanks to a certain dumb pandemic, this year’s Sea Otter Classic has been replaced with Sea Otter Play, an online event that’s shaping up to be as big as the real-life version, if not bigger, as it now gives exhibitors access to a worldwide audience.

Both Paul Components and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. are both located in Chico, CA, and many of Paul Price’s component designs have been penciled out on a napkin over a cold Pale Ale. Needless to say, they’ve both been long-term fans of each other’s work.

For 2020, an idea was hatched to create an offroad explorer, bike packing kinda bike, the type that can be loaded up for a light overnighter of camping and fireside good vibes. In keeping with tradition, the services of numerous neighbors were enlisted.

Another Chico local, Tyler Reiswig of Chico’s BTCHN’ Bikes, is somewhat of a fabrication legend, having grown up racing BMX, then racing and wrenching karts, flat-track and two-stroke motorcycles. Later on, he was a mechanic in bike shops and raced MTB.

Tyler fillet brazed a rigid frame for the project featuring his signature seat stays, hand-crafted dropouts and headtube rings filed to emulate the Sierra Nevada logo, which was then built up with an array of parts from as many Cali-based producers as possible.

The most visible of contributions was a full suite of mirror-polished Paul parts, from Klampers to a Gino light mount. White Industries supplied the crankset, hubs, bottom bracket and a headset in the same finish.

Outershell Adventure made a strapless frame bag that mounts to braze-ons inside the frame and the bag for the Pass And Stow rack, Velocity supplied the rims and Ultradynamico the tires. Tattooist Dannyboy Smith engraved the Brooks B17 saddle.

The frame is painted with a topographic map of the Butte Meadows area, laid down by the legendary painter Russ Pickett, known for his awesome work on Mountain Goat Cycles, who Tyler managed to coerce out of retirement.
