It’s important, every once in a while, to be reminded not to take things too seriously — especially on a Friday. It’s all too easy to get blinkered by the bike world, but this oddball Serotta should reset things, just in time for the weekend.
Victor Equoi is a graphic designer based in Bordeaux and has been heavily involved in the French fixed gear scene for many years. For daily commuting, his go-to ride was a Rychtarski pursuit track bike, until a different fix was needed.
He and his mates recently began playing around with bikes from other genres, albeit of a similar vintage to his Rychtarski. Victor, in particular, developed a fascination with Columbus’ MAX tubeset, and the gradient paint work of early Serotta MTBs.
With the help of his local Monsieur Pignon Madame Guidon bike shop, a Serotta T-Max frame was sourced and built up with the most eclectic parts possible, including purple anodised brakes, PAUL levers, a Girvin stem and a vintage XTR rear mech.
It came together almost too well, and has just about replaced his pursuit bike as an everyday ride. The extra tyre width and gears are also enabling him to explore beyond the city limits — and it makes me smile every time I look at it.
