Hold On To Your Horns: Speedvagen MTB Prototype

How many of you have wondered what would happen if Speedvagen built a MTB? You could bet the results would be just as spectacular as their CX and road rigs and, guess what? It happened, and it’s very spectacular.

Nestled amongst their display at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California last weekend, was a Speedvagen mountain bike with ‘PROTOTYPE’ printed in Ghost type on its chain stay.

Details are scant but our friend Spencer Maughan was on the ground to capture these images. Spencer gets around: he shot Cjell Moné’s own La Roca we featured here a few weeks ago.

Spencer did manage to glean a few points of information from the Speedvagen team, namely Dan Harrison, one of the frame builders at the unicorn stables, who let us in on a bit of the story behind the farme.

The bike was built as a prototype for Ivy Audrain, one of the Speedvagen team cyclocross riders and, as the tubing specs and geometry is specific to each rider, they didn’t let on what the frame was composed of.

What we can see, though, is evidence of a new headset ‘standard’, which consists of an external lower headset cup paired with the integrated upper headset bearing, which allows the head tube to be shortened, thus eliminating the need for a bent down tube.

The Speedvagen MTB features the same S-bend seat stays we know and love, internal cable routing, matching forks, thru-axles and pressed seat stays. Those chain stays look robust enough.

Here’s hoping a Speedvagen MTB makes its way into their annual catalog for the rest of us to enjoy. Hands up who’d like to add one to their quiver, and what Suprise Me scheme would you choose?
