The dust of last week’s Bespoked Bristol 2018 has finally settled, but the glitter sparkles of a hundred candy coated custom frames still hangs heavily in the air. This roadster from Spoon Customs shone brightly in the hallowed hall of Brunel’s Old Station.

Spoon Customs, the Alpine-based custom road bike boutique, exhibited four new bikes at this year’s show in Bristol, all of those bikes for customers whose build slots were promoted to the public via their Instagram feed.

The mesmerising collaboration between Spoon Customs and the M.C.Escher Foundation was on display — their most technical project displayed — but the biggest drawcard was this one, inspired by the sunsets of Montgenevre and commissioned by a special customer whose brief was simply: “Make it look like a galaxy”.

Underneath that 90s colorway is a sportif frame, immaculately TIG welded in Northern Italy with Spirit tubes from Columbus — who also supplied the Futura fork. The bike is rolling on a Bora One wheelset, driven by Campagnolo’s mechanical Record gruppo, Brooks saddle and a 3T finishing kit. The relaxed all-day geometry was measured by Tony Corke of Torke Cycling in London.

These days, there’s no doubt the skills of the frame painter plays a crucial part in the custom process, and the work of some of the UK’s finest was on display at the show. The paint is a six color radial fade applied by Dan Cole at Cole Coatings Workshop, a long-term collaborator on Spoon Custom projects.

Dan finished the fade with his own blend of Tropical Glitz pearl, giving it a durable and dazzling candy-floss coating that virtually bursts in direct sunlight.

While the frame was created in Italy, the final build was completed at Orange Row Speed Shop — Spoon Customs’ new workshop in Brighton’s North Laines.

Andy Carr of Spoon Customs tells us: “I set out to source the best knowledge, craft, materials, and finishers so Spoon Customs could turn up at shows like Bespoked and share work we can be proud of. “To be able to share the floor with the incredible award-winning design by Demon Frameworks, Saffron and Feather was a dream come true and it’s a big step for our little company.”
