Independent Fabrications

IF Caffeine Racer

One of New Zealand’s finest wheel builders, Tristan Thomas of Wheelworks, commissioned a disc brake-equipped road bike from Independent Fabrication. It’s one of the first frames to emerge from IF’s (new) New Hampshire home, and it’s proof that they’ve settled comfortably into their new space.

Tristan has held a deep respect and desire for Independent Fabrication frames for many years, ever since he was a ‘teenage mountain bike grom’. I’ll assume, however, that a disc brake-equipped road bike is significantly different to the bike he dreamed of owning back then. Tristan grew up on Vancouver’s North Shore, and visited New Zealand in 2002, only to fall in love with the country and one of it’s female inhabitants. He started Wheelworks to introduce quality wheelmanship to Wellington, and, aside from building some of New Zealand’s fastest wheels, is now also a regular contributor to both New Zealand Road Cyclist and New Zealand Mountain Biker magazines. And Directeur Sportif to Team Wheelworks Racing, among other roles.

Thanks to Joseph Kelly and Tristan for the photos. Check out the Wheelworks website here.

  • I’m spec’ing out my first disc cross bike, so I’m curious what people are building up for wheelsets these days. Is this bike built around a 135 hub in the rear? Are those White Industries disk hubs or something else?

  • Tony Pereira

Matt, Not sure what these hubs are (they look like old DT/Hugi), but I believe King can do a 130 disc hub. Ask your builder. I’m sure they can find out for you.

  • Matt – the hubs are current-model DT Swiss 240s which I polished on the lathe.  They’re 135mm spacing – personally I think 130mm disc is stupid and hopefully the industry goes to 135mm.

The 240s were one of the few hubs I could find in 28 hole.  With disc CX bikes becoming cool there should be a lot more hub options opening up which is great for custom wheelbuilders.

Lovely bike with an interesting aesthetic .. discs look pretty cool on a fendered steel bike!

  • K1W1

Looks like Lyall Bay. Nice backdrop.

Is the BB shell 68mm or 73mm?

  • this defines what “GT” sshould stand for.!. only reason i don’t give it a star it’s because it has mechanical & not hydro disc-brakes… 🙁 …
    p.s.: cool fenders btw… 😉 …
