Stayer Cycles is Leytonstone’s Local Bike Shop but Sam, the proprietor, is also a very accomplished frame builder and proponent of the local cyclocross scene. His latest frame is somewhat of a rapid departure from his usual fare.

This is Joe’s fast Stayer road bike, an ultra-modern contrast to the timeless quality of the stainless steel it was made from. While Sam has predominantly specialized in bikes that are simple solutions to mud and off-road riding, Joe wanted a raw fillet brazed finish, discs, an aero position, a bike as light and stiff as his last carbon road bike, integrated seatpost, and internal cable routing. Regardless, Sam delivered a brilliant result.

“The seat post topper,” Sam tells us, “is a copy of an idea used by Rob English that I was put on to by a friend when we were discussing how generally inelegant most toppers are. This coincided with a frame repair on another bike with a stuck Thomson seatpost which had left the top 150mm lying around in the workshop – I modified it to work like a quill stem inside the seat tube to achieve the simple, interrupted seat tube line I was hoping for.”

Sam tweaked the geometry to fit Joe’s height and routed the rear brake hose inside the downtube, through a T47 BB shell and out of the inside face of the chainstay. The raw finish was achieved by rubbing the frame down with 1000 grit paper and lightly waxed.

Sam explains: “The final build was with SRAM eTap, ENVE bars, stem and fork, White Industries headset and our own 60mm Stayer carbon rims in a 3K finish, laced to Tune Prince & Princess Skyline hubs.” It’s a serious bit of kit that Joe won’t shut up about. What has your LBS done for you lately?
