Vogel Frame Builders

Vogel Fahrradrahmenbau

There’s not a great number of custom frame builders in Germany, but the work of Ulrich Vogel alone takes up the slack. Vogel Fahrradrahmenbau has a portfolio full of ornate steel frames, racks and stems that reflect a Gothic influence. This internally geared mountain bike, by comparison, is one of Ulrich’s less embellished, but reveals even more of his craft.

Ulrich has built road bikes, porteurs, mountain bikes and cyclocross frames with predominantly lugged construction, but there’s some examples of superb bi-laminate / faux lug work. This MTB is a chance to admire a fine double-crown custom fork and Ulrich’s trademark sigil — an impressive display of fine filing. See more on the Vogel Fahrradrahmenbau website and flickr. love the frame. dont really care for the fork though.

  • when the preview photo loaded, i thought my screen was freaking out or that the jpeg had been corrupted because of the way the fork juts out

Interesting. I like that it is so well thought out and different. Not sure I’d buy one, but I sure like looking at it!

I would suggest that this is more of a Neo-Jugendstil in the vein of Otto Wagner and not Gothic. Wagner, prior to WW1 was moving out of the rigid hegemony of neoclassicism and art neuveau towards the rationalism of early modernism. The bikes exhibit the reductionist thinking we all appreciate in bikes, however, the ornament still reflects the early 1900’s influences of increased exposure to other cultural elements as evidenced by his logo. While this movement happened over a 100 years ago, he still seems to be rsponding to the same conditions that affected artisans then – the confluence of many cultures due to consumerism yet reduced down to what appeals to his german instincts.
